Your study
Notes in the margin, highlights, bookmarks and notebooks, your reading history and progress, and how to back them up. All of it stays on your device.
Your study stays on this device. Notes, notebooks, highlights, bookmarks and your reading history are kept in this browser's own storage, on this device, and are never sent anywhere. They do not travel to another device or browser, and deleting your account does not touch them. Clearing this browser's data for scrollwork.app would remove them, so keep a backup (below).
The Your study menu
Right-click a verse's text (or press the Menu key, or Shift+F10, on a focused verse) for Your study:
- Note here: a note set inside the text, marked with a small gold sign.
- Note in the margin: a note in the margin beside the verse.
- Highlight: the reader's inks, below. Remove Highlight takes one away.
- Underline.
- Bookmark, or Remove Bookmark.
- Keep in a notebook.
- Manage highlights.
Notes
A margin note opens its editor beside the verse. It has bold, italic, bulleted and numbered lists, and Link a
verse: write a reference in double brackets, as [[Rom 5:8]], and it becomes a link. As you write, it says
Kept on this device as you write, then Saved on this device.
Notes, in the reader's toolbar, shows or hides the margin and the inline notes, and opens My Notes.
Highlights
The reader's inks are a single or double underline, and washes in Gold leaf, Vermilion, Indigo, Sepia, Olive, Verdigris and Tyrian purple. A highlight marks the whole verse, one to a verse. Every ink is set to read clearly on light and dark paper.
Bookmarks and notebooks
A bookmark keeps your place at a verse. A notebook gathers verses and notes on one theme or study: Keep in a notebook lists your notebooks by name and keeps the verse in the one you choose. With none yet, it offers General, made the first time you use it.
My Notes
My Notes, in the menu's Study column, gathers everything in one place:
- My Notes: every note, searched with Search your notes, filtered by notebook and book, in Bible order or newest first. Make a notebook with Make; a notebook can be studied in Bible order or Along the timeline, renamed or deleted.
- Highlights.
- Bookmarks: in folders, in your own order or by title, with Move to… and Remove.
- History: the chapters you have read, newest or oldest first, the latest 500 kept; Clear empties it.
- My Progress: how much of the Bible you have read, below.
- The Study Reader: back to the reader.
Your progress
My Progress draws your reading as a gold rim around the Bible Library chart: how many of the 1,189 chapters you have read, and how many books you have finished, worked out from your reading history.
Backup and import
Under Export and backup in My Notes:
- Download a backup: one file,
scrollwork-backup-and the date, holding your notes, notebooks, highlights, bookmarks, their folders and categories, and your history. - Restore from a backup: choose a backup file. It asks first, then adds what is missing and keeps the newer copy of anything held twice. Nothing is removed. A file that is not a Scrollwork backup is refused.
- Export as Markdown: your notes as a plain text file to read or keep anywhere.
- Print: your notes on paper, without the controls. See Printing and PDF.
To move your study to another device or browser, download a backup on the first and restore it on the second.
The reader reminds you now and then to keep a backup, with Download a backup and Not now.
When the browser cannot keep anything
In a private window, or where this browser's storage is turned off, the reader says that what you write is not kept once you leave the page. Your notes then last only as long as the page is open.
Privacy
What is kept, where, and for how long is set out in full on the privacy page. In short: your study is on your device and nowhere else.
